Challenge
Financial distress, operational complexity, and portfolio sale under pressure
Overview
Bluestem Brands, owner of the long-standing Fingerhut retail platform, faced significant financial distress following its prior bankruptcy. With mounting operational inefficiencies, fragmented systems, and lender pressure to divest assets, the company needed a partner capable of stabilizing and transforming its credit card servicing to increase market value and enable a successful sale.
In 2025, we were asked to begin servicing one of the most complex private-label credit portfolios in the market within 150 days.
The challenge
Bluestem’s credit card ecosystem was challenged by:
- Highly fragmented operations across multiple vendors
- Outdated, end-of-life technology infrastructure
- Disparate data sources and systems of record
- Significant cost inefficiencies impacting profitability
- Urgency to position the portfolio for sale under lender pressure
Our solution
We executed a full-scale transition of the portfolio without disruption, which had a multi-pronged approach.
-
01
Operational Transformation
We deployed cross-functional teams on-site at Bluestem headquarters. This allowed us to map and re-engineer existing, complex processes, consolidate vendor relationships, and assume key servicing functions. To preserve institutional knowledge, we retained and integrated critical Bluestem SMEs.
-
02
Technology modernization and data consolidation
By consolidating legacy technology into our proprietary platform, we eliminated systemic inefficiencies, provided a unified source of truth, and improved data integrity and decision-making, thereby reducing costs and enhancing performance and reliability.
-
03
Seamless transition execution
Despite a tight timeline, we seamlessly transitioned servicing for over 750,000 active cardholders. We maintained an uninterrupted customer experience across payment channels, debt cancellation, and collections, which increased portfolio value.
During the servicing transition, a portion of the portfolio remained actively marketed for sale. We supported the sale process with the portfolio being successfully acquired by Jefferson Capital for $302.8 million, and we were retained as the ongoing servicer post-transaction.
The results
Our transformation directly enhanced portfolio value, enabling Bluestem to achieve a strong sale price under challenging conditions.
- Stabilized a distressed, complex portfolio
- Reduced operating costs and improved efficiency
- Modernized infrastructure and created a unified data environment
- Executed a zero-disruption transition for over 750K+ customers
- Enabled successful portfolio monetization
